Overview
Starting from 13 May 2026, myPOS will update the way certain payment cards are classified for transaction pricing. This change affects how we categorise cards issued in several territories that are not part of the European Economic Area (EEA).
While your Tariff rates remain unchanged, the definition of “non-EEA cards” (cards issued outside the European Economic Area) will be updated. As a result, transactions made with cards issued in these territories may be processed under the non-EEA category, which may affect the applicable acceptance rates.
What Is Changing?
Cards issued in the following territories will be classified as non-EEA (countries outside the European Economic Area):
- Andorra
- Gibraltar
- Monaco
- San Marino
- United Kingdom
- Vatican City
Previously, cards from these territories were treated as EEA-issued cards. However, these territories are not part of the EEA, and card schemes classify them differently from intra-EEA transactions.
Why This Change Is Needed
Card Schemes’ Requirements
Card schemes (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) treat transactions involving these territories as non-EEA. As a result, the operational costs we incur for processing these cards differ from those for intra-EEA transactions.
Industry Practice
Payment service providers commonly differentiate between EEA and non-EEA card transactions.
Consistency Across Markets
This update aligns the treatment of these card regions with how other non-EEA markets are already classified in myPOS Tariffs.
Impact on Your Tariff
Your Tariff Rates Are Not Changing
The update applies only to the definition of which cards fall under the “non-EEA cards” category.
Possible Impact on Transaction Costs
Transactions made with cards issued in the territories listed above may be processed under the non-EEA category, which may result in different acceptance rates for those transactions.
