Your myPOS card terminal handles your customers’ card details and PINs, so fraudsters may try to tamper with it to copy card data. A tampered device can look almost normal. Here’s how to check your myPOS device, keep it safe, and what to do if something doesn’t look right.
This article applies to all physical myPOS card terminals.

When Your Device Arrives
Before you use a new or replacement myPOS device, check that it’s the one we sent and that no one has interfered with it:
- The box hasn’t been opened, and the security seals are intact
- The serial number on the box matches the serial number on the device
- The device has no missing screws, holes, extra wires, or anything attached to it
- The security stickers on the device aren’t damaged or removed
We also recommend taking photos of your new device, so you can compare it with how it looks later.
If anything doesn’t match or looks wrong, don’t use the device.

Check Your Device Regularly
We recommend checking your myPOS device at least once a week, and whenever it has been out of your sight. It only takes a minute.
Check That It’s Your Device
- The serial number on the device matches your records
- The device is where it should be, and you have the same number of devices as before
Check the Device’s Condition
- No missing or loose screws, and no holes, scratches or marks around the seams or screen
- No extra wires, cables or connectors
- Security stickers aren’t damaged, and there are no new labels or stickers that could be hiding damage
- The device looks the same as in your photos
Check for Skimmers and Hidden Cameras
- Nothing is inserted in or attached to the card slot, keypad, screen or ports
- No hidden cameras nearby that could record customers entering their PIN
Check That It Works Normally
- The device starts up as usual
- There are no warning messages you don’t recognize
If anything looks wrong, stop using the device and contact us at help@mypos.com.
Keep Your Devices Secure
- Keep a list of your myPOS devices with the model, serial number and where each one is used. Update it whenever you add, move or retire a device
- Only let trusted employees use your devices, and show them how to spot tampering
- Keep devices out of sight or locked away when you’re not using them
- Place your device so that other people and cameras can’t see customers entering their PIN
- If you have video surveillance, check the footage regularly for anyone suspicious near your devices
Watch Out for Unexpected “Technicians”
Fraudsters sometimes pose as technicians or myPOS staff to swap or open a device.
- Never hand over your myPOS device or let anyone open, repair or replace it unless you’ve arranged this with us
- Ask for ID, then check with us using the contact details on our website – not a phone number or email the person gives you
- If you do allow an authorised visit, stay with the person the whole time
If someone turns up unannounced, or you’re not sure, don’t give them access. Report it to us at help@mypos.com.
What to Do If You Suspect Tampering
- Stop using the device. Don’t take any more card payments with it.
- Don’t try to open or fix it. Keep it somewhere safe until we tell you what to do.
- Contact us right away at help@mypos.com or through your account manager.
When you contact us, please include:
- The device’s model and serial number
- What you noticed and when
- When the device was last working normally
- Photos of anything unusual, if you can take them
We’ll let you know what to do next.
What to Do If Your Device Is Lost or Stolen
Any transaction made on your myPOS device, even if it’s lost or stolen, is linked to your myPOS account. Act right away:
- Disable the device. Log in to your myPOS account, go to POS Devices, select the device, then go to Settings and disable it.
- Email us at help@mypos.com
- Report a theft to the police and send us a copy of the police report.
In your email, tell us:
- The model and serial number of the device
- Where and how it was lost or stolen, and how you found out
- Whether it was in use or still in its sealed packaging
- Whether you’ve filed a police report
- What you’ve done to stop it happening again
